Media Options Channels: Magazines, Newspapers
Rumors have it that Apple plans to announce a subscription billing option for newspapers and magazines on the iPad. The announcement is expected to come Dec. 9, and to be conducted as a press event in conjunction with print executives including Rupert Murdoch of News Corp.
The announcement will likely be for an option that lets publishers bill for subscriptions through iTunes, rather than a central "newsstand" from Apple, according to John Gruber of Daring Fireball.
The news follows reports that News Corp's expected tablet-only daily newspaper is part of a joint effort with Apple.
Rumors about varying solutions from Apple for the problem of subscriptions offered on iPhones and the iPad have circulated for months. The problem lies in the fact that publishers have been hesitant to sell subscriptions via Apple's app store because of the hefty fee Apple charges, and because Apple maintains proprietary subscriber info and won't share it with publishers; publishers, for their part, need that information, which they use to bundle offers, upsell other products, and sell advertising.
