Earlier today we reported that the Asian PC makers do not see Ice Cream Sandwich to help Android tablets competing against the iPad this Holiday shopping season. Now a new report from research company Gartner says the same thing. According to Gartner The Android Tablet market share is only rising 3% this year compared to 2010. The iPad is losing about 10%, but still commands a 73.4% market share. Gartner predicts that Apple will still own 50% of the tablet market in 2014. By then the tablet market is supposed to already grown to a 300 million units market. This year a total of 63.6 million tablets are supposed to sell world-wide.
"So far, Android's appeal in the tablet market has been constrained by high prices, weak user interface and limited tablet applications" Ms. Milanesi said. "Google will address the fragmentation of Android across smartphone and tablet form factors within the next Android release, known as 'Ice Cream Sandwich,' which we expect to see in the fourth quarter of 2011. Android can count on strong support from key OEMs, has a sizeable developer community, and its smartphones application ecosystem is second only to Apple's."
2012 could change things with the entry of Microsoft and Windows 8 tablets. RIM might also come around with QNX and Google might be finally find a way to take the success they have with Android in the smartphone market to the tablet. That things can change quickly can be seen by Gartner lowering the Android marketshare forecast by 28% compared to last quarter.
