When the iPad initially launched, it needed no further introduction as there were predecessors who had done exceedingly well and paved the path for its grand entry. Its network connection was via wireless connection which is pretty similar to offerings from other notebooks. Since wireless connection relies on a wireless infrastructure, it therefore became a bother when none was available in the immediate vicinity. 3G, on the other hand, was more of an offering in the territory of mobile telephones. Hence, the brainchild of an iPad 3G was born by combining the wireless and the 3G in the same device.

Although both networking functionalities are available in this device, the user can opt to manually switch between either one depending on the network coverage of the area. Alternatively, the iPad 3G is able to seamlessly switch without user intervention.

As in most countries with iPad 3G infrastructure, the user normally signs with an operator to subscribe to a 3G plan or contract. In the United States, iPad's arrangement with a major telecommunication provider allows its user to purchase a no-contract 3G service. In other words, you purchase 3G service based on amount of data per month. One plan is capped by a specific amount of data whereas the other plan is based on unlimited data. This releases the user from the need to sign up for a long-term plan in order to enjoy 3G service. In the event the maximum limit of data is reached, the user can opt to purchase more data or upgrade to the unlimited data option. Either way, the user is prompted with reminder messages on his iPad as usage nears the limit.

Since iPad 3G was newly launched in May this year to the American market, the availability of the above 3G sign-up options is probably not yet extended to other countries with 3G infrastructure as yet. In fact, this device has already hit a shortage after the first week of sale. Once it is released to the international market, perhaps a no-contract 3G service or short-term 3G service plans of a similar nature will be made available.
